Season 1963 -- Unity Series

Unification series contested between clubs from the Queensland Soccer Federation and the Brisbane & Ipswich Soccer Football Association

[ Season 1963 -- Main Page ]

Background to the series

The QSF was formed at the start of the 1962 season as a breakaway of 20 clubs from the Association.

Many clubs had remained with the Association which had continued for two seasons (1962 and 1963) before agreeing to merge with the QSF.

The QSF State League was reducing from 10 to 8 clubs in 1964, so a 'Unity Series' was held to determine the 8th place.

Qualifying for this series were the bottom three clubs in this season's QSF State League, the winner of QSF Division 1, and the top four clubs in the Association.

Hollandia wins first promotion contest 6-3

BRISBANE, Qld - Hollandia has its first promotion contest for one place in the State League, winning 6-3 against Easts.

Hollandia started well immediately and after 3 minutes Gerry Nahuysen had a strong shot on goal.

The goalkeeper could not keep the ball under control and it rebounded. Henk van Bennekom shot in: 1-0.

Easts then went on the attack and equalised.

Hollandia played quietly until the 30th minute when it was 2-1 by Gerry Nahuysen, after good combination play with Hans de Vos and Ray Rule.

Easts was clear after this excited. Gerry Nahuysen scored number 3 via a pass from Henk van Bennekom.

In the 42nd minute it even became 4-1. Henk van Bennekom shot in from a corner kick, taken by Norm Rule.

After the break, Hollandia again went directly onto the attack.

After 5 minutes of play Frank Thehu scored with a shot from 16 metres to make it 5-1.

Hollandia did everything to score more, because the goal average counts in the promotion competition.

Gerry Nahuysen shot after 10 minutes hard against the goalkeeper from Easts who let the ball slip. Hans de Vos did not hesitate: 6-1.

East then threw everything into the attack and finally brought the score back to 6-3.

Exciting match of Hollandia against Blackstone

BRISBANE, Qld, September 14 - Hollandia played a 2-2 draw against Blackstone in a very exciting game in the Unity Series.

Hollandia, champion of the first division of the Soccer Association, like St Helens, has 1 point less than Redbank Dinmore in this tournament.

Redbank is the champion of the first division of the Soccer Federation. Hollandia's match against Redbank will be decisive in this tournament.

The first half of the game against Blackstone was played at a very fast pace and it was then that all 4 goals were scored.

Blackstone opened the score in the 5th minute through a nice goal from Barry Payne. However, they didn't enjoy this lead for long, because Gerry Nahuysen equalised in the 11th minute.

When 39 minutes had passed, Blackstone were back in charge thanks to a goal by Rob Hughes, but less than a minute later Henk van Bennekom deposited the equaliser in the net.

The second half was also very exciting. The youthful Blackstone team fought for all it was worth. The 2-2 scoreline gave a fair reflection of the game.

Hollandia lost chance of place in State League

BRISBANE, Qld, September 22 - Hollandia wasted its chances of getting into the State League by a 1-0 defeat to Redbank.

Hollandia started this game a bit uncertain.

Redbank's youthful team was faster and appeared slightly stronger.

Since this game is more or less decisive in this special competition, it meant there was a lot to play for.

Redbank scored the winning goal after 30 minutes of play.

The Hollandia players protested for offside. The linesman also flagged for offside, but the referee awarded the goal.

The second half showed a similar picture with Redbank generally the faster team.

As a rule, the Hollandia defence allowed Redbank to control the game.

In the last fifteen minutes, Hollandia moved strongly in attack, but this yielded no results.

The final whistle brought a 1-0 loss to Hollandia.

BRISBANE, Qld, September 28 - It was clearly noticeable that nothing was at stake before Hollandia's match against Germania, which Hollandia won 5-2.

The halftime score was 1-1 and the goal for Hollandia was scored by Gerry Nahuysen.

In the second half, Germania scored once more and Hollandia scored four times.

The goals were scored by Gerrit Nahuysen, who scored twice, Henk van Bennekom and Jack Blom.

Hollandia was the better team in this half and the victory was amply secured in the 35th minute with the fourth goal.
