Challenge Cup
Season 1876
Season Notes
Inclusion of matches
Only matches exclusively involving senior metropolitan provincial clubs not played at odds are included.
Scores listed here
Only full-time scores are listed. Behind totals were rarely reported, so all games only have the final goal totals listed.
Senior clubs
Senior metropolitan clubs in 1876 were:
== Albert Park
== Carlton
== Carlton Imperial
== East Melbourne
== Melbourne
== St Kilda
North Melbourne was unable to arrange fixtures against the leading senior clubs in 1876 and elected not to field a team.
Many leading North Melbourne players represented Albert Park in 1876 which was consequently often referred to as 'Albert Park cum North Melbourne' for this season.
Carlton Imperial lost many of its best players to Carlton during this season and did not re-appear as a senior club in 1877.
East Melbourne also had problems as the season progressed (mainly administrative) and failed to re-appear in 1877.
Provincial clubs
Senior provincial clubs in 1876 were:
== Albion (Ballarat)
== Ballarat
== Barwon
== Geelong
== Geelong Imperial
The Albion club of Ballarat was in existence from 1873 to 1877 and is separate club from the Albion Imperial (formed in 1876) which went on to become South Ballarat.
Ballarat Imperial (formed 1875) was known as Ballarat Galatea in its first two seasons (1875 and 1876). It played no games with senior opposition in 1875 or 1876.
Geelong Imperial was formed this season as a merger of Kardinia and Corio Extended. It appears this club only played for a single season.

Notes:
- Games played at odds, or against Junior clubs are not included in the above ladder.
- Provincial teams are listed separately from Metropolitan clubs, as was customary of this era.
- No official system was used at this time to rank teams
------ Therefore, the Proportional Points system (officially used only from the 1888 VFA season onwards) has been used to rank teams in the above table.
- Where two teams are close on Proportional Points (less than 4.00 points separate) then head-to-head results between teams are used to rank:
------ Melbourne played Carlton four times for two wins, a draw and one loss
------ Albert Park played St Kilda twice and won once and drew once
------ East Melbourne played St Kilda twice and drew twice
------ Albert Park did not play East Melbourne
------ Geelong played Ballarat once and won
- Behinds were rarely recorded during this season. Games were decided by goals scored only, and behinds did not count towards the final score or in determining the result of matches.
- The percentage column of goals for divided by goals against is included as an indication only.
